Blog: A quiet exit today, but Sachin Tendulkar sent us cups of tea

Mumbai: "Is he inside? Will he speak to the media."

Waiting outside the Master Blaster's high-security bungalow near Carter Road in Bandra West, the expectation was that Sachin Tendulkar would indulge the media and open up one final time.

Anticipating a huge crowd of his fans and the media, the Mumbai police beefed up security, even adding a small contingent of the state reserve police force.

Residents from the building opposite his bungalow peered outside to get a better view. One old lady even comfortably positioned herself on a chair in her balcony, just in case her neighbors too joined in and there was a scramble for space.

After all it was his final exit from the sport he had played for nearly a quarter of a century.

Alas, as expected, that never happened. "Tendlya" didn't oblige even on his big day. The quiet superstar chose a quiet exit.

No drama, no flashiness. The humility with which he spent his active years, with that humility he has chosen to call it a day.

But the considerate cricketer, who has dealt with the media for so many years, graciously did send some hot tea for waiting reporters.

Luckily for the police the crowd didn't swell. A few fans did stop by, including a large group of kids from a nearby madrassa. The rest were curious passers-by who were happy to learn from us that Sachin lived right there. One youngster waited for two hours with a plastic bag carrying bananas. An enterprising journalist asked him if he had brought it for his hero.

madrassa-students-outside-sachin-home-295.jpg"Nahin, boss. Apne liye hai," he said.

Respect, admiration and trust. Talk to any fan and this is basically what they think and feel about Sachin. But the fan is also a lover of the game. The announcement hardly comes as a surprise. After playing for so long, at 40, age had caught up. And India was ready to let Sachin go, but with his held high and with full honors.

And hence, their response was just apt. They saluted their hero, showered him with a million praises, wished him well and now want to see him bat like a legend in his last test match.

But even the city's die-hard fans realize: sometimes even God is human, even if he happens to be a "Mumbai cha Mulga." (Mumbai Boy)!

Ranbir Kapoor calls Besharam complete nonsense, tears up ticket

Ranbir Kapoor got angrier than common man after watching the film
Mumbai. Taking a cue from our ageless youth icon Rahul Gandhi, another youth icon Ranbir Kapoor has called his recently released movie ‘Besharam‘ a “complete nonsense” and has torn up a ticket of the movie to display his anguish.

The incident happened when director of the film, Abhinav Kashyap was talking to the press while attending a promotional event after the film had a poor opening. Though Ranbir was not invited at the meeting but he, out of nowhere and without any prior intimation, jumped into the press conference.
Thinking that Ranbir was there to promote the movie, Abhinav handed over the mike to him. But to his shock, Ranbir called the movie a complete nonsense. Not only that, he tore up and threw away a ticket of the movie that he was carrying in his pocket.
Ranbir immediately left after that, leaving everybody stunned. After recovering from the shock, Abhinav in a damage control exercise clarified what Ranbir’s statement actually meant.
“He was only trying to convey meaning of the ‘title’ in English  by calling it ‘Nonsense’ for the understanding of the English media,” Abhinav tried to downplay the situation just as he had been downplaying reviews of the movie.
However, experts feel that this was a deliberate attempt by Ranbir to distance himself from this disaster called Besharam like Rahul Gandhi previously distanced himself from the disaster called ordinance, and that is why he took so many days to come out in open. The only difference being, while Ranbir has been giving hits after hits, the same can’t be said about Rahul.
But Ranbir’s aides have a different story to tell. According to them, he actually watched the movie only last night and it was an impromptu decision by him to call it “nonsense”.
Meanwhile sources from the film’s crew allege that it was an attempt by Ranbir to malign Abhinav publicly.
According to them, there were differences between the actor and the director over who is calling the shots ever since the movie went on floor. But after the movie’s dismal box office performance, both were seen crediting each other for its failure at every event.

Bollywood actress Anjum Nayar arrested twice in 24 hours

Actress Anjum Nayar being escorted from her apartment to the police station
Mumbai: Twelve hours after she was detained, fined and let off for playing loud music in her apartment, model and Bollywood actress Anjum Nayar, who was last seen in the 2011 movie Cover Story, was re-arrested at 4.30 pm yesterday.

Sending out a strong message that abuse and misbehaviour will not be tolerated against upholders of the law, the Oshiwara police booked her for directing a tirade of foul-mouthed abuse at police officers, which was filmed by a neighbour, and then passed on to the cops.

After watching the footage, the police consulted with their superiors and they arrived at a decision to take stringent action in the matter.

Nayar has been booked under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 294 of the IPC. She will be produced before the court today.

At 1.30 am on Monday, the police control room relayed information to the local police station that neighbours were complaining of loud music emanating from the 20th floor flat at Samartha Angan building in Andheri (West).

Two beat marshals arrived at the flat, but to their bewilderment, an intoxicated Nayar started using profanities repeatedly, even directing expletives at the city's police commissioner.

The stricken cops then called for woman constables to deal with the situation. Fifteen minutes later, two lady constables arrived at the spot and Nayar was hauled off to the police station where she was booked, fined and released at 5 am.

The entire fracas was, however, captured by a neighbour who later showed the recording to the police who in turn informed their higher-ups of the footage.

After a few hours of consultation, Nayar was called back to the police station and re-arrested. "We have arrested the model for abusing and misbehaving with our officials and subsequently abusing the commissioner. She was drunk during the time of incident. We had gone to her home after receiving a complaint from the control room," said Nasir Pathan, senior police inspector, Oshiwara police station.

A constable from Oshiwara police station, on condition of anonymity, said, "She was continuously abusing us while we were taking her to the police station. Moreover, after reaching the station, she started threatening us by saying she will complain against us to the top officers.

The other side

Meanwhile, Nayar is alleging that she was slapped by the women constables, and ill treated by the police. Nayar said that she was with a few friends in her apartment enjoying some wine and soft music when the cops knocked on her door. She claims that the music was so soft that it could not be heard even in the next room. Despite this, the officers misbehaved with her and also slapped her, which forced her to retaliate.

She said that the female constables started beating her from her flat till the police station and after reaching there, the on duty police officer too misbehaved with her. She has, however, accepted that she had consumed alcohol, but claims she was not drunk.

Mumbai model-turned-actor arrested for allegedly playing loud music at night, threatening cops

Anjum Nayar is seen hurling abuses at the policemen who are standing outside her door.

Actor Anjum Nayar has been arrested for threatening and abusing policemen who came to her house in suburban Andheri for allegedly playing loud music late on Sunday night.

In a video recorded by the police, the actress is seen hurling abuses at the policemen who are standing outside her door.

The model-turned-actor was arrested and booked under IPC sections 294 (obscene acts and songs), 353 (deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation), police said.

According to police, Anjum, who resides on the 20th floor of the 'Samartha Angan' building in Andheri, was playing music at a high volume on Sunday night following which irate neighbours complained to police. Two policemen came to her apartment at about 2 am on Monday and asked her to reduce the volume. She began abusing the policemen and threatened them, police added.

She was detained on Monday afternoon and placed under arrest. A fine was also slapped on her.  She will be produced before the court on Tuesday.

CLT20: Sachin Tendulkar first Indian to reach 50,000 runs in all formats

In Mumbai Indians' semi-final against Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday, Sachin Tendulkar reached another landmark by completing an astounding 50,000 runs in competitive cricket across all formats.

Needing 26 runs on the day to reach the mark, Tendulkar tucked the ball towards midwicket for a single off left-arm spinner Yannick Ottley to reach another milestone in a glorious career spanning close to two-and-a-half decades.

He scored 35 off 31 balls before being dismissed by Lendl Simmons.

Tendulkar now has 50009 runs in 953 competitive matches, which includes 551 List A matches, 307 First-class matches and 95 T20 games.

Tendulkar has so far scored 25,228 runs in 307 First-class matches, including a staggering 15,837 runs in 198 Tests.

The 40-year-old has 21,999 runs in 551 List A matches which includes 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs.

Having scored 2747 in the 94 earlier T20 matches, the Master Blaster scored the necessary 26 runs with ease.

Tendulkar has had an ordinary 2013 CLT20 tournament till the semifinals and could score only 20 runs in four matches with a highest score of only 15.

Sachin is also standing on the cusp of another rare feat of becoming the first player in the history of the game to play 200 Test matches, which in all likelihood will be completed in the upcoming two-Test series against the West Indies.

Customs clear more than a tonne of gold at Mumbai airport: officials

Mumbai: The customs department has cleared more than a tonne of gold, part of which was owned by Bank of Nova Scotia, the biggest gold importing bank, at the Mumbai airport after rule clarifications at a high-level meeting held last month, industry and bank officials said on Saturday.

Gold imports into India, the world's biggest buyer of the metal, had virtually stopped after a July 22 circular which tied domestic consumption to exports.

"More than one tonne of gold was stuck at Mumbai airport and everything has been released. People have taken delivery of gold and the festival season has started with a good news for exporters," Pankaj Kumar Parekh, vice chairman of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council told Reuters.

The resumption of imports after a two month gap is positive for exporters like Rajesh Exports and Shree Ganesh Jewellery ahead of the peak Christmas season.

It is also positive for domestic jewellers in the run up to the festival season, which peaks with Dhanteras in November, the biggest gold buying festival.

"We were after the customs since two months and finally our consignment has been cleared. We will start processing our orders from Monday," said an official with a private bullion importing bank in Mumbai, who wished not to be named due to company policy.

India, battling with a record high trade deficit and a weak currency, is trying to curb imports of dollar-denominated gold, the most expensive non-essential item in its import bill.

India may import a total of 30 tonnes in October, half of the normal average, out of which 6 tonnes might go for exporters and 24 tonnes for the domestic market, Parekh said on October 1.

India imported 393.68 tonnes of the yellow metal from April to September 25, slightly higher than the normal average of 60 tonnes per month.

A finance ministry official estimated gold imports at between 750 and 800 tonnes in the fiscal year through March 2014.

Now, get your cooking gas at your petrol pump

Bangalore: Now, pick up your cooking gas cylinder with minimum fuss at a petrol pump. Five kg cylinders will now be available at selected company owned petrol pumps as part of a pilot scheme - and all you need is a valid identity card. For now the facility will initially be available in just 11 outlets in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore on a pilot basis.

This is a new initiative from the government - cutting out some of the paper work and making it easier to get hold of an LPG gas cylinder. The cylinders are not subsidised - and the first cylinder would cost Rs. 1000 plus taxes and regulator costs - and almost Rs. 500 for a refill.

The Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Veerappa Moily, formally launched the scheme in south Bangalore in his home state of Karnataka.

He told NDTV this was one of the ways to make things easier for consumers.

This new scheme should help people in transferrable jobs and migrant labourers to quickly get hold of cooking gas with minimal paperwork as no proof of address is needed.

And timings for picking up the gas and later refills would also help those who work long hours - as petrol pumps are open until late. This should be good news for IT and BPO employees who often stay in office until late - and may not be at home to take delivery of cylinders.

Connection portability was also launched in 30 cities across India. This enables LPG consumers to switch to a different gas distributor - even those from different companies.

So it does look as if it might be easier to get your hands on a gas cylinder from now on. You can pick it up at the same place you might go to refuel your vehicle.

Narendra Modi tells advertising executives why marketing India is tough

Mumbai: For the first time since he was declared the BJP's choice for prime minister, Narendra Modi visited Mumbai today.

Mr Modi landed shortly after 5 pm and was welcomed by a huge gathering of party workers who had assembled there to greet him.

He then travelled to Bandra to the Bharat Diamond Bourse - the world's largest diamond exchange - to address diamond traders, most of who are from Gujarat and are loyal supporters of the chief minister.

"Go to Google and take out a print-out of all the things against me... the long list won't fit even in this room. But, despite this, the people have always supported me," Mr Modi claimed.

After that, he was the keynote speaker at a dinner  for top ad executives from India and abroad.

"The challenge in projecting Brand India to the world is that we don't have confidence in our product," he said. "We should recognize our strengths to be able to market ourselves," he added.

The chief minister said that in his opinion, the world's best communicator was Mahatma Gandhi. "He always got his message across, and was never misunderstood," he said.
