Shall we dance, Mr Modi? His tattoos for this year's Garba

A woman gets her arm inked with a Narendra Modi tattoo

Ahmedabad: Move over, Shah Rukh Khan. There's a new man in Garba town.

Till last year, young men and women in Ahmedabad flaunted temporary tattoos of Bollywood's rich and famous. This year, not so much.

"What better way than having Narendra Modi's tattoos on Garba revelers? There is a craze amongst the youth for making temporary tattoos and we in our own way are contributing to his popularity," said Jagruti Parmar, a tattoo artist at a parlour in Ahmedabad.

Mr Modi, the 64-year-old chief minister of Gujarat, is running for Prime Minister.  And many in his home state want to do their bit for his campaign in the nine days of Garba - the dance all-nighters that are the highlight of the nine-day Navratra festival.

"Girls want to flaunt their tattoos with their backless cholis (blouses). Apart from general tattoo designs, Narendra Modi tattoos are the latest trend during the Garba," said Shalini Saxena, who got a Modi tattoo on her back.

Mr Modi's young male supporters are getting his face imprinted on their biceps. So for this Garba season, it's all about "NaMo, shall we dance?"

Inventing a better toilet for India, funded by Bill Gates

New Delhi: The remarks over toilets may have led to war of words between Narendra Modi and Jairam Ramesh, but the issue of sanitation, which was at the core of this tussle, seems to have finally found the attention that it deserves.

Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Bill Gates, through his Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has launched "reinvent the toilet challenge - India" in collaboration with the Government of India. The foundation is inviting innovative sanitation technologies, to develop sustainable sanitation solutions which will help not just India but other developing countries.

"Last year we issued a call to reinvent the toilet. Now we're issuing one specifically for #India," Mr Gates tweeted today.

Poor sanitation has often been described as India's biggest failure. An estimated one billion people defecate in the open in the world and India is home to 638 million of these - over 50 per cent of the population.

Also, 60 per cent of the world's population without access to a toilet are in India.

Ruby Devi in Bihar is one of those millions. Her husband is a labourer, she says they don't have enough money to build a toilet.

"We have little money, shall we use it buy food or build a toilet? It is very difficult. Our girls have are forced to use the open backyard," she says.

The curse of poverty deprives these people of basic sanitation which leads to many health hazards.

A recent UNICEF report showed that poor sanitation is responsible for the stunting the growth of 62 million children under the age of five in India.

According to the World Bank, all this adds up to billions and costs India a loss of $54 billion dollars a year.

Toilets over temples, at least seems to be one issue the Congress and the BJP appear to be agreeing on, but will the focus lent by this war of words, followed by the Gates-government initiative, result in improvement on the ground for millions of Indians?

“NaMo NaMo, PM go”: a fan’s ‘youth anthem’

New Delhi: There seems to be no end to Modi’s fan club. In the latest strike, a Narendra Modi fan has created a ‘NaMo youth anthem’.
The song, uploaded on you tube on the 6th of October, has gone viral on social networks.
The creator, Krishnan Sugavanam, has described it as “An anthem for the youth, in support of Sri Narendra Modi as the PM candidate for India.”
The lyrics encompass an enormous list of adjectives in praise of Modi. Chronichling Narendra Modi’s rise from being a tea vendor, the song goes on to described him as everything from “the nation's curator” to “the last air bender”.
As is usual with anything NaMo, it has attracted all kinds of reactions. A look at the comment on you tube shows that the song has left some people totally aghast and others just as elated.
“This is going to be my new workout song!” commented a user bharath kumar ganesh.
While user Ankita Chawla wrote, “This is sad day fro music, for poetry, for the entire idea of Rhyme scheme, and every edition of thesaurus ever published.”
Official reactions are still awaited.

Narendra Modi not bigger than Vajpayee, says Chidambaram; compare with your PM candidate, counters BJP

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party today hit back at Finance Minister P Chidambaram for his remarks on Narendra Modi calling the Gujarat chief minister neither "bigger than Vajpayee in terms of image and acceptability" nor "stronger than either Vajpayee or Advani."

Mr Chidambaram, in his interview to a news agency yesterday, also dismissed the emergence of the Gujarat chief minister, claiming that the hype around the BJP's prime ministerial candidate was "largely media created."

Atal Bihar Vajpayee, the only BJP leader to head a government at the centre so far, was considered an acceptable face of the right-wing party to its allies, as opposed to a polarising Mr Modi, accused of his government's complicity during the Gujarat violence in 2002 in which hundreds of Muslims were killed.

Responding to the remarks, the BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said Mr Chidambaram has given a "walkover" to Mr Modi by accepting that no Congress leader matches the calibre of the BJP prime ministerial candidate.

"If Chidambaram considers himself better than Indira Gandhi, then it is a different thing. Atalji and Advaniji are our leaders. If he wants to give an example, Chidambaram should know that Modiji is far better than Rahul Gandhi. He should compare him (Modi) with his party's prime ministerial candidate," said the BJP spokesperson.

Though Mr Chidambaram, in his interview, conceded that the BJP's prime ministerial candidate has been able to "unite the rank and file of his party" and "gained some traction among urban youths", he said his party's challenger for the 2014 elections was someone with a "very, very chequered track record."

The Finance Minister, in his interview, pointed out that Gujarat ranks 12th in the Raghuram Rajan committee report in terms of economic growth. His remarks came on the day Narendra Modi became the first chief minister of Gujarat to complete 12 continuous years in office.

Google survey: 40% of India's urban voters undecided, Narendra Modi most searched

New Delhi: Over 40 per cent urban Indian voters are undecided on the political party of their choice, a survey by Google India has revealed, months ahead of elections due by May. (Google survey: urban Indian voters and the internet)

The survey also reveals that Narendra Modi has emerged as the politician most searched on the Internet in the past six months. (Here are India's 10 most-searched politicians)

The BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate is followed by Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and anti-corruption campaigner, Arvind Kejriwal, who debuts in the November Delhi assembly polls.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is the sixth most searched politician in India.

Mr Modi's BJP also tops the list of most searched political parties. The Congress, Mr Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party, Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party and Shiv Sena are the others most searched.

Search volumes reveal that four of the top 10 politicians are from Congress, while two belong to the BJP.

The survey not only found 42% of the voters undecided, but revealed that most voters believe the local candidate is as important as the political party, in deciding who to vote for. Only 11 per cent said the Prime Ministerial candidate of a political party will play an important role in their voting decision.

Google India's survey, which studies the role of Internet in the upcoming polls, covers over 7,000 internet users in 108 constituencies; it represents 20% of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies across India.

Urban India is asking for more information on the local candidate on the Net, revealed the survey, to help them decide. Half of the undecided voters feel information on Internet is not enough.

Internet presence, felt the respondents, shows politicians as progressive and transparent leaders.

Two-thirds of the registered voters don't share their political views online, a fallout of the recent crackdown on social media posts.

Narendra Modi has united the rank and file of BJP: Chidambaram

After terming Narendra Modi's claims on growth during the NDA regime as a "fake encounter of facts", Finance Minister P Chidambaram again targeted BJP's prime ministerial candidate, saying the hype surrounding him was "largely media created". But the minister, in an exclusive interview to news agency Reuters, also conceded that the Gujarat Chief Minister had "gained some traction among the urban youth", while also managing to unite "the rank and file of BJP". He also added that Mr Modi was no Vajpayee, BJP's iconic former prime minister, and had a "very, very checkered track record."

Nitish Kumar to attend Left rally with Mulayam Singh; denies talk of 'Third Front'

Patna: Nitish Kumar has said he will attend a rally in Delhi on October 30, which is being seen as a gathering of parties likely to try and join forces as a 'third front' after the elections due by May.

But as he confirmed his presence in the Left Front rally, Nitish Kumar said any speculation about a 'third front' is premature.

On Monday, Nitish Kumar did not rule out a tie-up with the Congress, after his party colleague Shivanand Tiwari openly rooted for it.
Mr Kumar said he would take a call after October, referring to a party meeting later this month.

He has been seen as warming up to the Congress even before his party ended its 17-year alliance with the BJP in June over the elevation of Narendra Modi, who later became the party's Prime Ministerial candidate for 2014.

But sources say a section of the JD-U is in favour of going it alone and playing a larger role in a possible third front grouping.

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Left leaders have already said they will attend the October 30 rally, which they said was a call to action against "communal forces".

Mulayam Singh had said on Monday that the next Prime Minister would be a third front candidate, as neither the Congress nor the BJP would win enough numbers to come to power.

Keran operation called off; Pakistan's support behind infiltration, says army

Srinagar / New Delhi: One of the longest anti-infiltration operations in recent times ended today with the Indian army finishing seven massive search operations of a three-km area in their mission to hunt down the terrorists in the Keran sector along the Line of Control.

In the operation that lasted 15 days, seven terrorists were killed and six jawans of the Indian army were injured. Army officials say an infiltration of this size could not have been possible without the support of the Pakistan army.
"On the LoC, we are eyeball to eyeball with Pakistan Army. How can such a large group infiltrate without the complicity of the Pak Army?" General Officer Commanding, Northern Command, Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra said today in Srinagar while announcing the end of the Keran operation.

Speaking at an event near Delhi today, army chief General Bikram Singh categorically said that the seven terrorists killed while infiltrating at Keran may have been part of a 40-member infiltration group. He also ruled out any domination or occupation of any area by the terrorists.

"Which adversary is going to dominate an area by sitting in a nullah? Sure, there was infiltration bid but that has been foiled. It was a desperate infiltration bid," Gen Singh said.

Bodies of dead terrorists may also have been dragged back or buried in crevices or the thick jungle, army sources said.

Yesterday, NDTV spoke exclusively to one of the soldiers who was engaged in the massive Keran encounter. He said that he saw 35 to 40 infiltrators as he took a bullet in the abdomen.

CBI to say Ishrat Jahan was 'innocent college girl' in next chargesheet

New Delhi: The CBI will soon declare that  it has found no evidence of terrorist leanings for 19-year-old  Ishrat Jehan, who was killed by the Gujarat police in 2004 along with three men.

Sources say that in its next chargesheet, to be filed within the next two weeks, the agency will say that Ishrat was "an  innocent college girl", presenting a boldface controversy for chief minister Narendra Modi, who is in the running for Prime Minister.

The BJP has already alleged that the ruling Congress, unable to politically combat Mr Modi's surging popularity, is using the CBI to question his credentials and mar his reputation as the national elections approach.

In its first chargesheet presented in a Gujarat court in July, the CBI accused seven senior policemen of murdering Ishrat and her three male companions  in "cold blood" and of planting an AK-56 at the scene of the shooting to portray the victims as terrorists.

One of those officers, DG Vanzara, who was then Deputy Commissioner of the Amedabad Crime Branch, wrote an explosive letter to Mr Modi from jail recently.

He alleged that Mr Modi's close aide, Amit Shah, who was Home Minister when Ishrat was killed, was aware of the police's actions, but that the cops have now been betrayed by a weak state government.  The senior officer repeated the defense that his team was trying to fight Pakistani terrorists.

The CBI says that Mr Vanazara has refused to cooperate and share more details of the accusations he made in his note against Mr Shah. So far, the CBI has not interrogated Mr Shah, or linked either him or Mr Modi to its investigation.

If you fear Narendra Modi, why use President's shoulder to fire? BJP to Nitish Kumar

Patna: The BJP has launched a tweet attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, accusing him of trying to sabotage Narendra Modi's rally this month by inviting President Pranab Mukherjee at the same time.

"If you fear NaMo (Narendra Modi) so much, why use Hon President's shoulder to fire? Have courage to bring your partner Rahul Gandhi to Bihar," said BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain, taking a dig at Nitish Kumar's perceived bonhomie with the Congress ahead of polls due in May.

Mr Hussain said the Gujarat Chief Minister's rally on October 27 was announced way back in March. But Nitish Kumar, he alleged, was "trying to create an atmosphere of confrontation" by putting hurdles in his way.

This adds another chapter to the acrimonious break-up between the long-time allies, who ended their 17-year partnership amid sharp differences over Narendra Modi's elevation.

On Sunday, Nitish Kumar was targeted by BJP's Sushil Kumar Modi, who was his deputy until the June break-up.

"Nkumar is playing all tricks to put hurdles in success of NAMO's Hunkar Rally on 27th Oct. First permission for whole Maidan was denied. Now Nkumar has invited President of India to Patna on the same dates. He will be in Patna on 26th &27th (sic)," Sushil Kumar Modi tweeted on Sunday.

"The whole city will be barricaded for President's visit? Namo's plane will not be allowed to land till President's spl plane takes off?" he added.

Sources in the Bihar government denied the allegation, claiming that the President's schedule is decided by his office.

Yesterday, a leader from Nitish Kumar's party wrote to the Chief Minister, urging him to cancel Mr Modi's rally. "I also request you not to hesitate in arresting Modi if he dares to hold this rally in anyway," the JD(U) youth wing national general secretary Pradeep Yadav wrote.

Narendra Modi a good administrator, but he should make BJP 'secular': Jagan Mohan Reddy

Hyderabad: Jagan Mohan Reddy, who began an indefinite fast yesterday to protest against the Centre's decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh, has said that he hopes the BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is able to give the party a 'secular' tag.

"How can you discriminate against someone just because they are born with a particular region. This kind of insecurity leads to internal terrorism. This situation should change and Narendra Modi should change the BJP. Every party should be secular," Mr Reddy told NDTV last night. He also said that that it is 'indisputable' that the Gujarat Chief Minister is a good administrator.

Earlier, Mr Reddy amped up his attack considerably against the Congress.

"Someone wanted their son to become PM and divided the state," Mr Reddy said referring to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, and her son Rahul, who is No. 2 in the party.

The government's decision earlier this week to carve out one of the three regions in Andhra Pradesh as a new state has left the other two parts, jointly referred to as 'Seemandhra', seething with protests. Today was the second day of the strike in the 13 districts in the region.
Mr Reddy and his party, the YSR Congress, draw their support from Seemandhra.

Yesterday, Mr Reddy challenged the Congress to explain why it cannot reverse the decision on Telangana given that just last week it withdrew a contentious executive order designed to protest convicted MPs after Mr Gandhi described it as 'nonsense.'

Mr Reddy's father, YSR Reddy, was a senior Congressman and Chief Minister of the state when he died in a chopper crash in 2009. Mr Reddy exited the party, claiming he had been sidelined by the Congress.

He left jail just 11 days ago after spending more than a year in prison on corruption charges. The case against him is still being investigated.

Toilets before temples, says Narendra Modi; how BJP has changed, says Congress

New Delhi: Narendra Modi earned a round of loud applause and much cheering when he told 7000 college students in a Delhi stadium on Wednesday that he would build more toilets in India before he would build temples. (Make toilets before temples: Narendra Modi tells students in Delhi)

"My identity is of a Hindutvawadi, but I say build toilets before you build temples," the BJP's candidate for prime minister said, putting development before Hindutva as he rued the fact that many Indians still do not have access to basic sanitation.

The BJP is pleased with the punch-line and with the development agenda of its leader. "Kudos to Namo giving more importance to toilets than places of worship. Vivekanand also said Daridra sewa is Narain seva (serving the poor is serving the god)," tweeted Bihar BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi today.

But the Congress says, not so fast. Did Modi's BJP not criticize union minister Jairam Ramesh last year for saying much the same thing?

"BJP demanded Jairam Ramesh's apology, backing Modi on same statement now, shows BJP's double standards," tweeted Congress spokesperson and minister Rajeev Shukla this morning.

A year ago, almost to the day, Mr Ramesh had said, "I think toilets are more important than temples. No matter how many temples we go to, we are not going to get salvation. We need to give priority to toilets and cleanliness."

The BJP slammed Mr Ramesh with party leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy saying, "It would be good for Mr Ramesh that out of his exuberance he stops making such comments which will destroy the fine fabric of religion and faith."

Even Mr Ramesh's own party, the Congress, was not terribly pleased. The ruling party said it respects "the sanctity of every religious place". Party spokesperson Manish Tewari also said, "The Congress party believes in sarvadharmasambhav - equal respect for all religions and religious places.

Before I became Chief Minister, I hadn't even stood for being elected class monitor: Narendra Modi

New Delhi:  Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was in Delhi today, at an event where students from 200 colleges shared their ideas for change in India. He arrived at Delhi's Thyagraj stadium at about 11 in the morning and stayed through the day, as presentations were made and other political leaders spoke. In his concluding address, Mr Modi focused on governance and pitched his Gujarat model.

Here's our pick of Modi's five best quotes from his address to students:
  1. Before I became Chief Minister, I had not even stood for being elected class monitor in school.
  2. My identity is of a hindutvawadi - but I say pehle shauchalaya phir develaya (toilets before temples). I define secularism as nation first, India first.
  3. In my family, no one knew the P of Politics... I used to sell tea on trains and today I stand here in front of you. Stop thinking where you come from. If you want to change the country, start walking and you will find a way. If you move forward with an attitude that gives and not takes, the world will be at your feet.
  4. Governments have a psychology of secrecy, I say you need openness for good governance. In Gujarat, we keep draft policies online and invited every stakeholder to share views. By and large, policies beneficial to the state have evolved.
  5. I was asked if there will be early polls - I said even to have early polls, the govt has to take a decision and this govt is famously indecisive.

Make toilets before temples: Narendra Modi tells students in Delhi

New Delhi: Narendra Modi told about 7000 students in the capital today, "My identity is of a Hindutvawadi, but I say build toilets before you build temples."

The BJP's prime ministerial candidate for 2014 also told the young voters in his audience what secularism means to him. "I define secularism as nation first, India first. Justice to all, appeasement to none. No votebank politics - a poor man is a poor man, where he prays is immaterial."

Yesterday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said secular forces must come together to "stop the onslaught of people like Narendra Modi." The Gujarat chief minister's rivals question his secular credentials and accuse him of not doing enough to prevent communal riots in his state in 2002, when hundreds of Muslims were killed under his watch.

Mr Modi's was the concluding address at an event where students from 200 colleges shared their ideas for change in India. He arrived at Delhi's Thyagraj stadium at about 11 in the morning and stayed through the day, as presentations were made and other political leaders spoke.

His focus was on governance and he pitched his Gujarat model, but politics was implicit, not least when Mr Modi made a subtle dig at dynastic politics in the Congress: "In my family, no one knew the p of Politics... I used to be sell tea on trains and today I stand here in front of you. So stop thinking where you come from. If you want to change the country, start walking and you will find a way."

The crowd cheered lustily  as he delivered his punchlines. Mr Modi had prefaced, much to their delight, his address with the suggestion that he chat with them rather than give a heavy speech.

He also shared the stage with Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu, who had once shown much reservation to being seen on the same side as Mr Modi. There has been speculation that Mr Naidu, once a BJP ally, might be looking at an electoral  partnership again.
