Rahul Gandhi to replace Kapil Sharma in ‘Comedy Nights’

His stage presence is simply hilarious.
It appears that the weekend TV show “Comedy Nights with Kapil” on the TV Channel “Colors” would soon be getting a makeover.

The ouster of Kapil Sharma from the eponymous show he started on TV seems imminent – with Rahul Gandhi set to replace him.

Mr. Gandhi has, so far, provided comic relief to vast majorities of the Indian population with his observations on poverty, bees, space shuttles and other nonsensical things.
“Rahul Gandhi is funnier than Kapil by far- even on a bad day for Mr. Gandhi,” our source from within Colors, told us. “He makes the best analogies anyone can make and that too free of cost. Imagine what he would do if we were to give him a little bit of money for it.”

“He writes his own speeches,” a prominent Gandhi family speechwriter said, on condition of anonymity, refusing to accept any responsibility for any of Mr. Gandhi’s speeches.
“Even if we write something for him, he uses his quick wit and education to come up with incredible things on the spot, without any help from anyone. He is truly one of a kind.”

Narendra Modi not bigger than Vajpayee, says Chidambaram; compare with your PM candidate, counters BJP

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party today hit back at Finance Minister P Chidambaram for his remarks on Narendra Modi calling the Gujarat chief minister neither "bigger than Vajpayee in terms of image and acceptability" nor "stronger than either Vajpayee or Advani."

Mr Chidambaram, in his interview to a news agency yesterday, also dismissed the emergence of the Gujarat chief minister, claiming that the hype around the BJP's prime ministerial candidate was "largely media created."

Atal Bihar Vajpayee, the only BJP leader to head a government at the centre so far, was considered an acceptable face of the right-wing party to its allies, as opposed to a polarising Mr Modi, accused of his government's complicity during the Gujarat violence in 2002 in which hundreds of Muslims were killed.

Responding to the remarks, the BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said Mr Chidambaram has given a "walkover" to Mr Modi by accepting that no Congress leader matches the calibre of the BJP prime ministerial candidate.

"If Chidambaram considers himself better than Indira Gandhi, then it is a different thing. Atalji and Advaniji are our leaders. If he wants to give an example, Chidambaram should know that Modiji is far better than Rahul Gandhi. He should compare him (Modi) with his party's prime ministerial candidate," said the BJP spokesperson.

Though Mr Chidambaram, in his interview, conceded that the BJP's prime ministerial candidate has been able to "unite the rank and file of his party" and "gained some traction among urban youths", he said his party's challenger for the 2014 elections was someone with a "very, very chequered track record."

The Finance Minister, in his interview, pointed out that Gujarat ranks 12th in the Raghuram Rajan committee report in terms of economic growth. His remarks came on the day Narendra Modi became the first chief minister of Gujarat to complete 12 continuous years in office.

A Dalit needs Jupiter's escape velocity to achieve success: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi reached out to the Dalits on Tuesday and urged for more representation for the community in the Congress party. He attacked Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati, saying she was not allowing other Dalit leaders to rise.

The Congress vice-president said the Dalit community "needs the escape velocity of Jupiter" to achieve success.

He dwelt on astronomy to explain the phenomenon of escape velocity -- or the speed that an object needs to be travelling to break free of a planet or moon's gravity.

Addressing a function on National Awareness Camp for Scheduled Castes Empowerment at Vigyan Bhavan, Rahul Gandhi said BR Ambedkar was the first Dalit to attain escape velocity and after him Kanshi Ram channelised "the energy that was created due to reservation" and helped many Dalits attain escape velocity.

But he said Mayawati, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, had captured the Dalit leadership and was not allowing others to rise.

The Congress leader said if the movement for escape velocity has to be taken forward it needs the participation of lakhs of Dalit leaders.  He said he has asked prominent Dalit leaders in the Congress to systematically develop leadership at "panchayat, MLA, MP and policy level".

At another function at Talkatora Stadium to mark Dalit Adhikar Diwas (Dalit rights' day), Mr Gandhi described the Dalits as the "reed ki haddi" or spine of the Congress party.

To loud cheers of "Rahul Gandhi zindabad", "Rahul Gandhi is the messiah of the downtrodden" and the "India's rising star", he said the Congress party would do everything to empower the Dalits.

"Congress is the party for the poor, our opposition does not understand the problems of the poor. They don't go to their homes and hold their hands or discuss their problems. And then they speak of India shining. And lose the polls. They lost it in 2004, in 2009 and will lose again in 2014," he said.

Google survey: 40% of India's urban voters undecided, Narendra Modi most searched

New Delhi: Over 40 per cent urban Indian voters are undecided on the political party of their choice, a survey by Google India has revealed, months ahead of elections due by May. (Google survey: urban Indian voters and the internet)

The survey also reveals that Narendra Modi has emerged as the politician most searched on the Internet in the past six months. (Here are India's 10 most-searched politicians)

The BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate is followed by Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and anti-corruption campaigner, Arvind Kejriwal, who debuts in the November Delhi assembly polls.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is the sixth most searched politician in India.

Mr Modi's BJP also tops the list of most searched political parties. The Congress, Mr Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party, Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party and Shiv Sena are the others most searched.

Search volumes reveal that four of the top 10 politicians are from Congress, while two belong to the BJP.

The survey not only found 42% of the voters undecided, but revealed that most voters believe the local candidate is as important as the political party, in deciding who to vote for. Only 11 per cent said the Prime Ministerial candidate of a political party will play an important role in their voting decision.

Google India's survey, which studies the role of Internet in the upcoming polls, covers over 7,000 internet users in 108 constituencies; it represents 20% of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies across India.

Urban India is asking for more information on the local candidate on the Net, revealed the survey, to help them decide. Half of the undecided voters feel information on Internet is not enough.

Internet presence, felt the respondents, shows politicians as progressive and transparent leaders.

Two-thirds of the registered voters don't share their political views online, a fallout of the recent crackdown on social media posts.

Keran operation called off; Pakistan's support behind infiltration, says army

Srinagar / New Delhi: One of the longest anti-infiltration operations in recent times ended today with the Indian army finishing seven massive search operations of a three-km area in their mission to hunt down the terrorists in the Keran sector along the Line of Control.

In the operation that lasted 15 days, seven terrorists were killed and six jawans of the Indian army were injured. Army officials say an infiltration of this size could not have been possible without the support of the Pakistan army.
"On the LoC, we are eyeball to eyeball with Pakistan Army. How can such a large group infiltrate without the complicity of the Pak Army?" General Officer Commanding, Northern Command, Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra said today in Srinagar while announcing the end of the Keran operation.

Speaking at an event near Delhi today, army chief General Bikram Singh categorically said that the seven terrorists killed while infiltrating at Keran may have been part of a 40-member infiltration group. He also ruled out any domination or occupation of any area by the terrorists.

"Which adversary is going to dominate an area by sitting in a nullah? Sure, there was infiltration bid but that has been foiled. It was a desperate infiltration bid," Gen Singh said.

Bodies of dead terrorists may also have been dragged back or buried in crevices or the thick jungle, army sources said.

Yesterday, NDTV spoke exclusively to one of the soldiers who was engaged in the massive Keran encounter. He said that he saw 35 to 40 infiltrators as he took a bullet in the abdomen.

Words may have been wrong, but sentiment wasn't: Rahul Gandhi on ordinance

Ahmedabad: Rahul Gandhi on Thursday spoke for the first time about his scathing public review of the ordinance that was introduced to protect convicted MPs.

"My mother told me that the words that I used were strong. In hindsight, I feel maybe my words were wrong... but the sentiment I felt was not wrong," the young vice-president of the Congress told reporters in Gujarat. His mother, Sonia Gandhi, is president of the Congress party. "I am entitled to voice my opinion," he said, stressing that a large section of his party supported his stand.

The government withdrew the ordinance last evening, which Mr Gandhi derided as "nonsense" that should be "torn up and thrown away" at a press conference last week that was being addressed by senior Congress leader Ajay Maken. "I told him you can't defend the indefensible," Mr Gandhi said.

Apparently referring to the criticism by the opposition and some allies that he had insulted and undermined the authority of the Prime Minister and the cabinet, Mr Gandhi asked, "Why am I being penalised for raising my voice on something that was wrong?"

"I spoke my mind on the issue, it is amazing to see reactions to it. I am flabbergasted," he said.

On Wednesday, Mr Gandhi met Dr Manmohan Singh and reportedly expressed regret for the timing and language of his critique. However, he reiterated his opposition to the controversial executive order that was seen as a naked attempt to circumvent the Supreme Court.

In July, the court barred law-makers from holding office if they are convicted in cases carrying sentences of more than two years.

Two days after her son's blunt remarks, Mrs Gandhi defended the Prime Minister at a rally in Karnataka and attacked the main opposition party, the BJP, for "making fun" of him.

"They make fun of our party, our prime minister. I want to tell them that our whole party stands behind the prime minister," she said.

Rahul Gandhi repeats opposition to ordinance that could be scrapped today

New Delhi: A controversial ordinance that protects convicted parliamentarians and triggered a furious critique  from Rahul Gandhi is likely to be withdrawn this evening by the cabinet.

The Prime Minister has reportedly conveyed this decision in a meeting with afternoon with  President Pranab Mukherjee, who had allegedly expressed grave reservations about the executive order when it was sent to him for his assent last week. (Track LIVE updates)

Before visiting the President, Dr Manmohan Singh met with senior Congress leaders who agreed to ask the cabinet to rescind the ordinance, derided last week by Mr Gandhi as "nonsense."

Mr Gandhi, who is the vice-president of the Congress,  met the Prime Minister this morning and expressed regret for the timing and language of his remarks, said sources. They added that Mr Gandhi clarified that he did not mean to insult or undermine the authority of the PM or the cabinet, but he reiterated his opposition to the ordinance, which is an attempt to override a Supreme Court decision that disqualifies MPs and state legislators from office if they are convicted in criminal cases.

The young vice-president's scathing  review was declared while the PM was in the US.  (Watch what he said) The opposition said Mr Gandhi had insulted the Prime Minister while in the international spotlight, ahead of important meetings with his Pakistani counterpart and President Obama.

"It's collective wisdom. We got feedback from across the country," said Congress  spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury in an attempt to justify the reversal of policy.

PM indicates unhappiness with timing of Rahul's outburst

On board PM's Special Aircraft: The Prime Minister has reacted today for the first time to last week's public outburst by Rahul Gandhi against an ordinance cleared by the cabinet to protect convicted parliamentarians. Dr Manmohan Singh said he will not resign over the controversy, but his remarks suggested that he questions Mr Gandhi's decision to go public with his criticism while the Prime Minister was abroad.

"I have seen Mr Rahul Gandhi's statement. When issues are raised in democratic polity, the right course is to discuss the issues. Mr Rahul Gandhi has asked me for a meeting. I will also take my cabinet colleagues in confidence. There is no question of resigning," he said.

The Prime Minister's remarks - his first since Mr Gandhi described the ordinance cleared by Dr Manmohan Singh as "nonsense" - were made to reporters on his way back to India from the US, where he attended the UN General Assembly. He also stressed that the ordinance, which allows convicted MPs to remain in office while their appeal is heard by a higher court, was cleared at a meeting on September 21 of senior Congress leaders including party president Sonia Gandhi.

Dr Singh will meet Mr Gandhi tomorrow morning before another meeting with President Pranab Mukherjee, who has received the contentious ordinance for his approval. Later in the day, the cabinet will meet to decide whether to withdraw the ordinance, while contesting that it was designed to shield criminal MPs.

The opposition has said Mr Gandhi's public derision of the ordinance has grossly undermined the Prime Minister while he was on an international stage.

Dr Singh told reporters that he does not share that feeling because the Congress "is not an authoritarian structure" and "every Congress leader has the right to question a decision", but his remarks today indicate that he has concerns about the timing of Mr Gandhi's scathing review of the executive order. Dr Singh told reporters traveling home with him that that he is "not the master of what people say" and "is used to ups and downs."
